What to Expect When You Hire a Logo Designer

Never hired a logo designer before? Here is the real process in five steps: discovery call, stylescape, concept presentation, feedback, and final delivery.

What to Expect When You Hire a Logo Designer

Article

I talk to a lot of Orlando business owners who say the same thing: I have no idea what to expect when hiring a logo designer.

If you've never done this before, it can feel overwhelming. So here's what the process actually looks like when you work with us at Alchemy, step by step, no mystery. This is the logo design process, and a decent designer anywhere should have something like it.

That's your first filter, by the way. If a designer can't walk you through their steps before you pay, that isn't a small detail. That's the answer.

Step 1: we start with a conversation, then a stylescape

Every project kicks off with a discovery call. We get to know your business, your goals, your audience, all the stuff that makes your brand unique. This sets the tone for everything that follows.

Then comes the stylescape presentation. That's where we start visualizing the direction: colors, fonts, textures, photos, the overall vibe. It isn't the logo yet. It gives us a north star. You tell us what you like and what you don't, so we're aligned before any design begins.

That alignment step is what prevents the classic disaster: seeing a finished logo built on a direction you never agreed to.

Your job in this step: show up honest. Bring the customers you want more of, the competitors you get compared to, and the brands you admire, even the ones outside your industry. Vague input here becomes vague design later.

Step 2: logo concept and brand identity presentation

Once we're on the same page, we present your custom logo concept along with your full visual identity. You'll see how everything works together: color palette, typography, mockups, real world examples like signage or social media graphics.

Seeing a logo alone on a white page tells you almost nothing. Seeing it on a sign, a card, and a phone tells you whether it works.

Your job in this step: judge it in the wild, not on the white page. Shrink it. Picture it on your truck, your storefront, your Instagram profile. A logo that only looks good big and centered isn't finished.

Step 3: feedback, refinement, and final delivery

You give us honest feedback, and we refine it if it needs refining. Then final delivery: high quality logo files for print and web, color variations, and a brand style guide to keep things consistent across all platforms.

Your job in this step: consolidate your feedback. If three people in your business have opinions, merge them into one list before you send it. Three separate voices pulling in three directions is how good logos get rounded into mush.

And judge the work against your customer, not your own taste. The most common feedback mistake we see is an owner rejecting a direction they personally wouldn't pick, even though it's dead on for the people who pay them. Your logo doesn't have to be your favorite piece of art. It has to work on the person it's for. Specific feedback beats taste feedback every time: "our customers are contractors, this feels too soft for them" gives a designer something to fix. "I just don't love it" gives them nothing but a guessing game.

As you can see, it goes beyond just a logo. You need the full package. Our process page walks through the same steps if you want it before a call.

The red flag version of this process

It also helps to know what the bad version looks like. No discovery call. No direction step. A finished logo in your inbox in 48 hours, built on nothing but a quick description of your business.

That isn't speed. That's skipping the parts that make the logo yours. Speed at the front of this process usually gets paid back, with interest, in revisions and redos at the end of it.
