Don't Design Your Logo Until You Do This First

Designing a logo before you understand the brand is working backwards. Here is the discovery work that gives every logo real direction and purpose.

Do Not Design Your Logo Until You Do This First

Article

Most people want to jump straight into logo design. And I get it. It's the fun part. It's the thing you can actually see.

But here's the problem. If you start designing before you understand the brand, you're working backwards. And backwards rarely ends up in the right place.

The suit analogy nobody forgets

Imagine dressing someone in a conservative business suit before you've even met them. What if they've got the rebellious spirit of a punk rocker? Sure, the suit might fit. But does it actually represent who they are?

Absolutely not.

That's exactly what happens when you design a logo without any brand discovery first. The logo can look fine and still be completely wrong for the business wearing it.

A suit isn't good or bad. It's just wrong for that person.

What brand discovery actually means

Discovery isn't a fancy word for a long meeting. It's answering a few basic questions before anyone opens design software. That's it.

Who's it for?

You need to know who the customer is. What matters to them. What'd make them pick your business over the next one.

And "everyone" isn't an answer. A logo aimed at the wrong person can be beautiful and still fail.

What should it feel like?

Serious or playful? Rugged or warm? That one answer changes every design choice after it. The font. The colors. The shapes. All of it.

What's everyone else doing?

You've got to know what the rest of your industry looks like. If three competitors all look the same, copying that look just makes you the fourth one nobody remembers.

Our brand identity process starts here for a reason. Strategy comes before the sketching. Every time.

The five minute version you can do yourself

You don't need a consultant to start this. Grab a notebook and answer three things honestly:

That's your starting point. Bring those answers to whoever designs your logo.

And if they don't ask you a single one of those questions before showing you designs? That's not a designer being fast. That's a designer guessing with your money.

Direction beats guessing

Once you've figured that stuff out, the design actually has direction. You're not picking colors because they look nice. You're not choosing a font because it's trendy.

Every decision has a reason behind it. Without that work up front, you're just guessing. You might end up with a good looking logo. But that doesn't mean it's the right logo. And there's a big difference.

Plenty of businesses learn that difference the expensive way, ending up with a brand that feels inconsistent everywhere it shows up.

Your logo isn't your brand

Your logo is a picture of everything your brand stands for. It carries the meaning. It isn't the meaning itself.

So before you worry about what your logo should look like, figure out what it's supposed to represent. That's where good branding starts. The design work gets much easier, and much better, once that part's clear.

What happens when you skip it

We've seen the other version of this story plenty of times.

An owner hires someone to just make a logo. Picks the option they personally like best. Launches.

Six months later the business has shifted. The customers aren't who they expected. And the logo already feels wrong. So they pay to redo it.

Then the business cards change. The sign changes. The website changes too.

The first logo wasn't cheap. It was just paid for twice.

Discovery feels like the slow step. It isn't. It's the step that stops you paying for everything twice.

If you're about to start a logo and nobody's asked you these questions yet, that's a warning sign. Book a free brand consult and we'll start in the right order.
