What Is Included in a Professional Logo Design?

A professional logo package is more than one file. Primary logo, variations, color palette, typography guide, and every format you need for web and print.

What Is Included in a Professional Logo Design?

Article

Your logo is one key element of your brand identity. But a professional logo design package gives you a lot more than a single file.

Whether you're launching something new or refreshing what you have, here's what should actually be in the package. If any of this is missing, ask why.

The five essentials

1. Your primary logo

This is your main logo, in its full form. It's the version you'll use most, on your website, business cards, and marketing materials.

Everything else in the package supports this one.

The check is simple. Open the file your designer sent you. If the "package" is one image and that image is the primary logo, you didn't get a package. You got a picture. Keep reading, because the next four items are where you'll feel the difference.

2. Logo variations

A strong custom logo comes with multiple versions. Horizontal. Stacked. Simplified. Icon only.

These make sure your brand looks right on everything from social media to signage, without you stretching or squishing the main logo to fit.

And you'll try to fit it. Everyone does. The day you need a square profile photo or a wide banner, a logo with no variations gets forced into spaces it wasn't built for. That's where brands start looking homemade, one awkward crop at a time.

3. A color palette

Your brand colors should be picked professionally and handed over in HEX, RGB, and CMYK formats.

That's web, screen, and print covered, so your colors stay consistent everywhere instead of shifting from piece to piece.

Ask for the codes, not just the colors. "Dark blue" isn't a spec. If your printer, your web person, and your sign shop are all guessing at your blue, you'll end up with three blues and none of them yours.

4. A typography guide

A professional designer in Orlando will include the fonts for your headlines, body text, and callouts.

Fonts do more work than people think. The guide keeps every future piece looking like it came from the same company.

Without one, whoever makes your next flyer picks whatever font is open on their computer. Do that ten times and your business reads like five different companies sharing a name.

5. The file formats

You should receive high quality files in PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF, and AI formats.

That mix keeps your logo sharp and scalable, no matter where it gets used. One JPG on a white background isn't a logo package.

The test comes later, and it always comes. A sponsor needs a vector. A printer needs a PDF. Your website needs a transparent PNG. If you have to email your designer begging for files every time, you never really owned the package. You rented it.

It's an investment, not a download

A well designed brand identity package costs more than a quick logo. It also saves you from paying twice. Once for the cheap version, and again to fix it.

What to do if you only got one file

This happens a lot. A business comes to us with a single JPG they got years ago, and nothing else. No vector. No variations. No color codes.

That doesn't always mean starting over. Sometimes the logo itself is fine and what's missing is the package around it. The variations, the palette, the guides, and the formats can be built properly around a mark that already has recognition.

What you can't do is keep running a growing business on one file. Sooner or later it breaks somewhere visible.

If you want help putting this into practice, our professional logo design work is built for exactly this, especially if you're dealing with keeping a brand consistent. Related reading: the hidden value of a custom logo design.
